What kinds of symptoms do allergic skin conditions cause?
Skin allergies can cause an array of symptoms that can vary in intensity from person to person. Some of the most common symptoms include:
- hives or welts
- itching
- rashes
- scaling
- swelling
- flaking
- oozing or weeping
When affected areas are scratched, bleeding and infections can occur which can result in fever, red streaks in the skin and warmth in the affected area. Sometimes, skin allergies are also accompanied by respiratory symptoms like coughing, sneezing or wheezing. Angioedema is an allergic reaction that causes swelling under the skin, most notably around the eyes and in the throat and mouth, which can cause significant problems with breathing.
What are the most common causes of allergic skin conditions?
Skin allergic reactions can be caused by many different triggers, including foods, medicines, cosmetics and body care products, soaps and shampoos, laundry detergents, pet dander, cockroach debris, pollutants, plants, chemicals, pollen – even stress and certain diseases. People who have a family history of skin allergies and other types of allergic reactions tend to be more likely to develop skin allergies themselves.
How are allergic skin conditions treated?
Treatment will depend on what's causing the allergic reaction, although for any type of skin allergy, the first step is to try to avoid the trigger whenever possible. When complete avoidance isn't an option, symptoms can be treated with topical creams and ointments to relieve symptoms like itch and inflammation. In some cases, oral medications may be needed to treat symptoms on a systemic level. Often, an approach that combines both topical and oral treatments will provide the best results. Immunotherapy using allergy shots may also be useful in some patients with significant symptoms.
